Abstrak

The use of mulch in the cultivation of red chili plants as a bed cover / ridge surface cover is very necessary because it provides benefits, including reducing the rate of evaporation from the surface of the land thereby saving water use, minimizing soil temperature fluctuations, and reducing energy and costs for weed control. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect and type of best mulch on growth and yield of red chili plants. The study was conducted from February to April 2016, in Dutohe Village, Kabila District, Bone Bolango District, Gorontalo Province. The research method used was a randomized block design (RBD) with four mulch treatments namely without mulch, rice straw, eggshell and black silver plastic. The results showed that the type of mulch treatment had an effect on the growth and production of red chili plants including plant height, number of leaves, number of fruits and weight of fruit crops. Rice straw mulch is the best and efficient type of mulch in increasing the growth and production of red chili plants Keywords: Red chili, rice straw mulch, egg shell mulch and black silver plastic mulch.
