Lintang, Intan Leony. 2020. Types of Linguistic Politeness and Impoliteness in Youth Organization of Makalisung Village, Kombi District, Minahasa Regency Department of Indonesian Language and Literature Education, Faculty of Letters and Cultures, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Principal Supervisor: Dr. Asna Ntelu, M.Hum Co-supervisor: Dr. Sance A. Lamusu, M.Hum
The study aimed to describe the linguistic politeness and impoliteness in speech. The politeness principle involves perspectives that view the politeness principle to 1) social norms, 2) conversation maxim and to Ã..."save one self's faceÃÂÂ, 3) the requirement of a conversation contract, and 4) sociolinguistic phenomenon. Moreover, Terkourafi (2008) argues that the impoliteness case is related to intimidating actions, e.g., cornering the interlocutor, threatening, limiting the interlocutors options, giving pressure, forcing, and Ã..."bad-mouthingÃÂÂ. The research intended to explore these problems: 1) the linguistic politeness in a youth organization in Makalisung village, Kombi district, Minahasa regency; and 2) the linguistic impoliteness in the organization.
The qualitative descriptive study involved the youth organization members in the research site as the representation of the community. The empirical data were in the form of all speeches uttered by the organization members as the native members of the community. The data collection technique was employed to record and conversation methods. Further, the data were analyzed by data reduction, data analysis, and conclusion formulation.
The results showed that: 1) the types of linguistic politeness in the organization were maintained by the members in most of their interactions, such as daily communication; 2) the impoliteness principle was a new phenomenon that caught the attention of pragmatic scholarship of linguistics. Such limited knowledge regarding the concept was reflected in the limited number of books or linguists who discuss the concept.
