Abstrak

ABSTRACT Bella Anggreani Ishak (2013) : Differences of Pre-sequence Expression Between Male and Female Characters in “ A Walk to Remember” Film by Adam Shankman This study is about pre-sequence expression, utterances uttered by the speaker as a signal to the hearer before the speaker goes to the main idea. Pre-sequence is usually used before announcing, requesting, inviting, arranging and closing something. The writer is interested in conducting an analysis on pre-sequence in “A Walk to Remember” film. The twoas main characters in the film, Landon and Jamie, uses pre sequences to each other to be indirect.. Thus, the writer wants to know the different of pre-sequence expression based on the gender in the film. In conducting the analysis, the writer uses Levinson`s theory of pre-sequence. As a result, the writer finds that pre-announcement is used the most for both of them. However, they did not produce pre-arrangement utterances because they utter it directly. There are some factors that affect the usage of pre-sequence in the film, such as personality and the status of relationship. Keywords : Pre-sequence, Types of pre-sequence, Gender
