Fedriyanto (2013): Disclosing Assertive Illocutionary Act in Second Presidential Debate between Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney
This study aims to find out the assertive illocutionary act especially the act of claiming and assuring which is happened in the second presidential debate between Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney. The data was taken from the second motion of the debate about oi and drilling regulation.
This research is using qualitative method. The data were gathered from the utterances that spoken by Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney. There are twenty utterances; seven utterances contain the act of claiming and thirteen utterances contain the act of assuring. The data is presented with the analysis and the context of utterance and collected by following three steps; video watching, utterances contain the assertive illocutionary act finding and utterances categorizing.
The outcome and result of this research can be concluded that in second presidential debate between Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney has been found twenty utterances; seven utterances contain the act of claiming and thirteen utterances contain the act of assuring. The context of the debate is both of the candidates are trying to catch the attention of the audience and the citizen of United States and make sure that they elect themselves to be the next president of United States.
Finally, hopefully this research will help the next researcher who wants to conduct a similar research. This research will be a good example of analyzing assertive illocutionary act in debate especially the act of claiming and assuring. Especially for the university student especially who majoring English and wants to know about the mechanism of claiming and assuring that happened in debate, this research can give them more knowledge about it and can help them in learning about assertive illocutionary acts
