Abstrak

The type of this study is descriptive qualitative research. This study was aimed to find out the kinds of Politeness Strategies used are in Othello (a film adapted from William Shakespeare’s Play) and to justify How Politeness Strategies used are in Othello (a film adapted from William Shakespeare’s Play). The data was collected by two steps as follows: (i) Watching and replaying the film in English subtitle. (ii) Printing the script. Then, analyzed the data by using Leech’s theory six number of maxims politeness namely tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim. The result of study discovered that politeness Strategies or six numbers of maxims by Leech (1983) are also applied in Othello. Politeness is used to maintain the social value of the community. Politeness also used by both of speaker and hearer to make them feel comfortable without considering the one and the other feeling. The characters uses politeness when they talk with one and each other when they saying something.
