Abstrak

ABSTRACT Hasmin Evrililya. Nim: 321 408 033. Skripsi: Using of polysemy in novel "The old man and the sea" by Ernest Hemingway. Department of English Education, Faculty of Letter and Culture. State University of Gorontalo 2015. The objectives of this study are to identify the words that categorize into systematic and non-systematic polysemy in novel "the old man and the sea" and to describe the meanings of the polysemy words in the novel. The method of this research is descriptive method. The data were taken from the sentences that contain of polysemy word. The result of this research shows that there are two kind of polysemy namely systematic and non systematic in the novel. They are systematic polysemy consist of 13 words and non systematic 9 words. In addition there are 9 words which is refers both of them. Therefore it can be concluded that systematic polysemy more dominates than the non systematic polysemy in the novel. Key word: Polysemy, Systematic and non systematic polysemy, novel "the old man and the sea".
