ABSTRACT
Jumrina (2013) : An Analysis of Students’ Pronunciation Errors in English.
This research was conducted toward Muna students in English department of Gorontalo state University. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative which describes pronunciation errors in English focused on four vowels (/æ/, /?/, /?/ and /?/). The problems of this research are what kinds of errors that Muna students do in pronouncing English and what is the causes of errors or why these errors happen/occur. The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds and the causes of errors made by Muna students in pronouncing English. The data was collected using a list of words that involves vowels (/æ/, /?/, /?/ and /?/), recorder and notes. Futhermore, the data was analyzed through five steps; collecting all of students’ pronunciation errors and transcribing them into the phonetic transcriptions, identifying the kinds of students’ errors into separate divisions, classifying the level of students’ errors, explain the causes of their errors and evaluating how many percents of errors made by the subjects. Finally, the result of the analysis shows that there are three kinds of errors made by the subjects such as shortening, lengtening and substitutions. The causes of pronunciation errors made by the subjects are interlingual transfer that related to the first language interferences and intralingual transfer that caused by unsucessfully in learning second language and the lack of awareness about English phonetics. The average percentage of various errors in pronouncing English vowels is 41.33%. There are three types of dominant errors. There are shortening (20%), lengtening (6.67%) and substitutions (97.33%).
To solve the students’ pronunciation errors, they need a lot of drills and practices to pronunce English using IPA by watching carefully how native speaker produce the sounds correctly.
