Types and Functions of Hedges used in J.K Rowling’s Interview With
Oprah Winfrey Show
This study is carried out to find out types and functions of hedges in J.K Rowling’s interview with Oprah Winfrey Show. J.K Rowling’s is one of inspiring women nowadays. Considering her existence to inspire people especially women, this pragmatics study attempts to find the types and functions in J.K Rowling’s utterances. The theory that is applied to find types of hedges is the taxonomy of hedges by Salager-Meyer (1997), while the theory of multiple functions by Coates (1996) is applied to find functions of hedges. It is found that Rowling’s utterances a lot of hedges, classified into seven types and four functions of hedges. The most frequent type is Modal auxiliary verbs. The second most frequent is approximators of degree, introductory phrases, if clause, adjectival, adverbial and modal phrases, modal lexical and the last is compound hedges. Furthermore, functions of hedges that appear the most is expressing doubt and confidence, which is followed by searching for the right word, and avoiding playing the expert. In addition sensitivity to other’s feeling as one of functions of hedges that could not be found, because in her utterance, Rowling’s only talked about herself without involving other people.
