Abstrak

Nurlaila Tahir. Nim.321408075 : An Analysis in Using Polysemy in English songs by Adele Laurie Blue Adkins. Skripsi, English Department, Faculty of Letters and Culture, Gorontalo State University 2014. This research is advesed Dr. H. Syarifudin Ahmad M.Pd as the first advisor and Sriwidyarti Ali S.Pd, M.Hum as the second advisor.
This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from Adele Laurie Blue Adkins's songs in 19 and 21 albums. The problem statement of this research are; what are the polysemy in Adele Laurie Blue Adkins's songs; What are the word classes of polysemy in Adele Laurie Blue Adkins's songs and; How are the meaning of polysemy words in Adele Laurie Blue Adkins's songs. The first objective of this research is to identify the word classes of polysemy in song lyric of Adele Laurie Blue Adkins's and the second is to Analyze the reference meaning of words polysemy in song lyric of Adele Laurie Blue Adkins's. There were four steps in analyzing data of this research namely; (1) Reading. (2) Identification. (3) Classification. (4) Analyzing. Then, words of polysemy found in Adele Laurie Blue Adkins songs are categorized by using Petho's theory of Polysemy. Based on the analysis of the data there are twenty polysemy that I found in fifteen songs of Adele Laurie Blue Adkins and seven word classes, namely; Verb: find, close, down, hold, play, end, hurt, like, see, tell, made, save; Noun: back, out, down, one, end, hurt ; Adjective: good, hard ; Adverb: back, close, out, over; Conjunction: over, like ; Preposition: on; and Numeral: one. Furthermore, it is concluded that there are several general conclusion based on the result of data analysis; as: first, a song can have similar words but different in meaning. Second, two songs can have similar word but different in meaning. Third, a word can have different meaning but similar in word classes. And the last, a word can have two meaning but different word classes.
