Abstrak
ABSTRACT
Mohammad Zainudin Saleh : A study on students’ ability in using and identifying English homophone and homograph in sentences. Skripsi. English study program, English Department, Letter and Culture Faculty, State university of Gorontalo. Supervised by Dr. Suleman Bouti, S. Pd, M. Hum as the first advisor and Muhammad Syamsurizal, S.S, M.Pd, as the second advisor.
This study is aimed at describing the English students’ ability in using and identifying English homophone and homograph in sentence. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative by using showing and counting technique of analyzing. This study used test to collect the data. Based on the research findings, the researcher found that the students’ ability is not the same in each category of test. By using the formula, researcher got the description about students’ ability, so the researcher found that the highest ability of students is in using homophone and the lowest is ability in using homograph. Then, some factors that affected it is students tendency in using characteristic of Indonesian language which is definitely different with the characteristic of English. In Indonesian language, the way to read a word is similar with the written form, but it is different in English. The difference is English has specific roles about certain word, especially in phonemic domain.
