Abstrak
MOHAMAD IRVAN S. DAUD: “Realia: Its Effect on Developing Mentality Retarded Students in Mastering English Vocabulary” (a Research Conducted at Senior High School – C of SLB Gorontalo City). The first adviser Dra. Hj. Rasuna Thalib, M.Hum and the second adviser Magvirah El. W. Kau, S.Pd M.Pd. The main problem of this research was “can realia develop significantly mentality retarded students’ vocabulary in English language?” The objective was aimed to investigate whether using realia can develop mentality retarded student’s ability in mastering English vocabulary. The subject was all of the mentality retarded students of Senior High School-C SLB Gorontalo in 2012/2013, which consists of 19 students (10 males and 9 females). This research used quasi experimental method by applying one group of pre-test and post-test design. The instrument used in collecting the data was the vocabulary test in multiple choices from 25 items. The hypothesis was “mentality retarded students’ English vocabulary can develop significantly by using realia”. To analyze the data, the researcher used research formula. Furthermore, result shows in pre-test, the total score are 284 or 59,78 % and in the post-test the total score are 365 or 76,84. From these score, found that the mentality retarded students’ ability in mastering English vocabulary is increasing about 17,05 % or English vocabulary of mentality retarded students develop significantly by using realia. Moreover, this research can be develop to other aspect of English skills or components, such as reading, speaking, listening, writing and simple tenses.
