The objectives of research are to find out the types of code mixing and the reasons of the using of code mixing in conversation. The participants of this research are from English Department students in 2012/2013 academic year at third semester students. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive method. Based on the data it is found there is code mixing in the conversation of English department students. There are several types of code mixing found they are insertion showed 32, 43% because some words are borrowed from English, alternation showed 40,54% because some words can give express students feeling, congruent of lexicalization was 10,81% because some phrases shift for variation in conversation and the last is the change of pronunciation was16,21% because some words follow the Indonesia pronunciation rule. From the types in code mixing that used in conversation alternation most showed was used in conversation because the words in alternation can give the strong expression from the English than Indonesia. Thus, the reasons of English Department students in the third semester used code mixing in conversation are quoting from somebody else, intention of clarifying content for interlocutor, being emphatic something (expression solidarity), because of real lexical need. The writer suggests that students of English department use English in their conversation and keep practicing it every day.
