Abstrak
ABSTRACT Priska Juliandini. (2013). The Analysis of Hemisphere’s Role of English Students in Producing Figurative Language. English Department, Faculty of Letter and Culture. The Principal Supervisor is Dr. H. Syarifudin Ahmad, M.pd, and The Co-Supervisor is Yusna Bantulu, S.Pd, M.A. This Research focuses on analyzing the hemisphere’s role of English students in producing figurative language. This research aims to find out whether the English students are dominated by right or left hemisphere, and to find out whether the English students use the right or left hemisphere dominantly in writing by investigating how often they use metaphor. This research applies qualitative method, by using observation, interview, audio-visual recorder, and document as the instruments in this research. The total numbers of participant of this research are 15 students in semester 7 of English Department, which have the academic record ? 3.5. Based on the data, the researcher find there are 6 students who are dominated by right hemisphere, 7 students are dominated by left hemisphere, and 2 students are in balance domination. Moreover, from 15 writings, the researcher finds only 6 sentences, which includes in figurative language and from 15 students, only 4 students can produce the figurative language. The Conclusion of this research are that the students of English department have insufficient creativity to produce figurative language or metaphor, and even though English students are the language learners which language is in the left side of brain, English students are not exactly dominated by the left hemisphere. Some of English students are also dominated by right hemisphere even some of them have balance domination. Key Words: right hemisphere, left hemisphere, balance domination, figurative language.
