Dewi Susanty Antuli (2014): "The Violation of Quantity and Relevance Maxims in Daniel Derrett's Comedy Novel "Hamsters"
The aim of this study is to describe the utterances that violate the quantity and relevance maxims and also to interpret and analyze the factors leading speakers violate both maxims. The data is taken from the dialogue in Daniel Derrett's Comedy Novel "Hamsters". This research applies descriptive qualitative method and the data have been analyzed by using pragmatics approach.
The findings show the utterances that violate the quantity and relevance maxims as interpretation of the data consist of ordering and requesting someone for doing something to interlocutor, commanding, complaining something, expressing feeling from speaker to hearer, bringing change the word in conversation and being influenced by representative in dialogues.
In addition, there are several factors leading the speakers violate the quantity and relevance maxims. They are the social status and age both speaker and hearer that influence the way of speaking in conversation, power relationship between speaker and hearer, to delicate or to soft the sentences, to entertainment, to respect each other and also keep the relationship between speaker and hearer.
