This study aims to find out types of pauses made by the students and their affecting factors towards students speaking ability. Some theories are used to lead for analyzing the data. First is theory from Zellner (1994), he classified pauses into silent pauses and filled pauses. Kinds of silent pauses are silent expiration and silent respiration. Kinds of filled pauses are filler words, repetition, and false start. Then, theory from Darjowidjojo (2005) he stated that there are three reasons why pauses happen, they are tip of the tongue, word choice, and false start. Descriptive qualitative method was used as underlying principle to analyze the data. For the participant, English Department in 2012/2013 academic year were chosen because they were in speaking three that was considered as a highest level of speaking class at that semester. Observation and interview were chosen for collecting data. Observation was conducted in four meetings. Twenty students were interviewed in order to gain information about students' belief, knowledge, and perspective about pauses. Analyzing the data was started by preparing the data, transcribing the data, reading all the data, coding the data, and making interpretation as the final step. A number of key insights emerge from the analysis. First, the most types of pauses made by the students were filler words. Second, affecting factors of pauses were tip of the tongue, word choice, nervousness, and lack of confidence. This study contributes to give deep insight about pauses in speaking and the result of the study point out about placement of the students in each class if the qualities of the students are being considered.
