Abstrak

Improving Students' Comprehension in Reading Descriptive Text by Applying "The Proof is in the Character" Method (A research conducted at second grade of SMAN 1 Suwawa class XC for academic year 2016/2017).English Department, Letters and Culture Faculty, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Advisors: (1) Titien F. Mohammad, S.Pd., M. App Ling. Advisor (2) Rahmawati Mamu, S.Pd, M.Pd. The aim of this research is to find out whether or not "the proof is in the character" method can improve students' comprehension in reading descriptive text. In this case, the sample of this research is taken by using purposive sampling. The sample of this research is 30 students of the tenth of SMAN 1 Suwawa. The method of this research is pre-experimental method with concern pre-test, treatment and post-test. The instrument used in collecting the data is the multiple choices test to measure their comprehension in reading descriptive text which refers to indicators reading which are topic, main idea, generic structure, inferences and conclusion. Based on the result of the data analysis of students' comprehension in reading descriptive text, the researcher found that the students' learning outcomes increased. The hypothesis is tested by using t-test formula. The hypothesis of this research is accepted, it because tcount is bigger than tlist (9.65>2.04) with the level significance = 0.05 and df = (n-1) = 29. Thus, by using the proof is in the character method can improve students' comprehension in reading descriptive text. Key words: Reading Comprehension, the Proof is in the Character, Descriptive Text.
