This research wasfocused on analyzing pauses and slips of the tongue of the English department students. This research designed to find out what types of pause and slip of the tongue which frequently occur to the English department students who participate the proposal examination and to find out the causes of pauses and slips of the tongue. This research applied qualitative method by using triangulation analysis including observation, questionnaire and interview. The total numbers of participants of this research were 5 students which were the English department students who followed the proposal examination in a day. Based on the findings, all participants experienced pauses during the proposal examination both silent and filled pauses. From all the participants,it was founded that there were 21 silent pauses and 286 filled pauses. In addition, slips of the tongue were 3 blends, 3 assembling anticipation, 1 shift, 2 malapropism, 1 deletion and 3 Freudian slips. Those were due to some factors such as nervous, lack of vocabulary, and lack of concentration. In conclusion, English department students still got mistakes which were pauses and slip of the tongue. They also often made repetition of words during their presentations.
