Advisors: (1) Titien F. Mohammad, S.Pd, M.A, App.Ling (2) Sri Rumiyantiningsih Luwiti S.Pd, M,Pd Presently, the writing ability in recount text is viewed as the big challenges among EFL students. What is underlined here is that the challenges faced by them will affect their written work particularly in recount text. Importantly, this study aims to find out students' writing ability in composing the recounttext without implementing any treatment. There were 30 students as the participants of this research. The subject of this research was the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 7 Gorontalo. Moreover, the method of this research was a descriptive quantitative method. In analyzing the data, the researcher used arubric of students' writing ability in the recount text which consists of topic, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanic. In addition, students' still have problems in vocabulary, because the capabilities of students in vocabulary is still little. Whereas, In grammar, there are some cases of grammatical errors in students' writing recount text performance test. Moreover, the researcher identified and categorized the students' scores into five categories namely very high, high, average, low, and very low. As a result, the researcher found that there was only 1 student who got a very high level. However, 16 students were on the High level, and 13 students were on the average level. Therefore, students' ability of SMP Negeri 7 Gorontalo in writing recount text can be categorized as on a high level (70%). It can be provedby providing the students' scores of their ability in writing a recount text. Key words :Writing, Students' writing abilty , Recount text
