The aim of this study is to describe the utterances included cooperative principle on "A
Beautiful Mind" Movie and describe the utterances that flout the cooperative principle on "A
Beautiful Mind" Movie. The data is taken from the dialogue in Ron Howard Movie
"Beautiful Mind". This research applies descriptive qualitative method and the data have
analyzed by using Grice theory. The data collected by taking notes while watching the movie.
After collected the data then the researcher analyzed the data by "Cooperative Principle"
theory, those are the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of
manner. The result of this study discovered the data contains in line of maxim and the data
contains the flouting maxim of Cooperative Principle.
Cooperative Principle use in a conversation because between the speaker and the listener in
communication needs the cooperation generating conversation clear, and being understood by
both of them but sometimes people cannot fulfill those maxims it is commonly occurred
because between speaker and the partner have different interpretation and understanding
about the context of situation or sometimes what the speaker ask is not fulfilled, it makes the
partner do not understand, and they talk irrelevant answer. The condition when the people
cannot fulfill the maxims make it exploited, it can be said as a flouting of maxim.
