This research aims to find out whether or not Total physical Response method can improve students' ability in Understanding Imperative sentence at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri I Suwawa. Total physical response is a teaching approach that combined the aspect of listening and doing or which known as learning by doing. It is considered as one of a creative method in teaching imperative sentence. This research used pre-experimental design by applying one group pre-test and post-test. In collecting the data, the researcher used multiple choices test as the instrument given in pre-test and post-test. The result of this research shows that there is a significant difference between students' score in pre-test and posttest. The average of students' pre-test score is 23.8 while the average score in post-test was 86.5. It means that the students score was increased after six times treatment by using Total Physical Response. The result of verification of hypothesis of the previous discussion reports that tcount>ttable or 5.293> 2.045. In other words, (H1) is accepted and (H0) is refused. In conclusion, the application of (TPR) method is effective to increase the ability of students in understanding imperative sentence
