Abstrak

The purpose of this research is to know and analyze the use of symbols in Langston Hughes poems. The symbols analyzed are two types of symbol categories; those are the universal and personal symbols that are contained in the selected poem of Langston Hughes. The poem title Negro, Me and the mule, Mother to son and Negro mother, Island, Not a movie and Democracy.
This research is qualitative research with qualitative descriptive method. Technique analyses used on this research are based on the dyadic concept offered by Ferdinand de Saussure trough the concept of signifier and signified.
The results of the study showed there are many uses of symbols in Langston Hughes poem. However, there are 71 symbols that have been found in Langston Hughes poems. Based on the results obtained the use of universal symbol is more dominant than personal symbol. Which is the universal Symbol found 60 symbols and persona symbol found 11 symbols of the seven poems. The universal symbol more generally explains the understanding of the object symbol with the universal meaning. Universal symbol is easily to understand because it involves general knowledge of the symbol around the world. While the personal symbol is quite glances at the personal experience of a writer of that object symbol and it requires analysis of the author's knowledge and background experience of the object symbol.
