This study aims at analyzing types of imagery in Poe's poem Tamerlane and exploring the meaning of the imagery, which happens to be the focus, in the poem. The poem Tamerlane is a long poem comprised of 253 lines. Hermeneutic approach by Ricoeur is applied to investigate the text of the poem. Steps in Ricoeur's Hermeneutics are distanctiation, appropriation, explanation, and interpretation. Among six types of imageries, the results report that there are only three types of imageries in the poem. These imageries are organic imagery, auditory imagery, and visual imagery. These imageries represent expressions, such as love, condition of death, pain, and image of women. To put it simply, these expressions describe about human life mixed with slight mystic expression, namely death and feeling of fear. It is expected that this study provide benefits, such as giving example about study of Hermeneutics on literary works, particularly poetry, and also equipping students with strong grounding on the research field.
Keywords: Hermeneutic, Text, Poetry.
