This study is proposed to analyze Switching Time novel (2007) written by Richard
Baer. The issues discussed how this novel shows the effects of the personality of a
person after experiencing a chronic trauma in childhood and the contribution of
literary elements such as characters, conflicts, and settings that refer to the text
based on interpretation to reveal the result. The purpose of this analysis is to know
how the effects of childhood trauma of a character in the novel, Karen Overhill.
The analysis of this study using Dudley theory of the effect of childhood trauma
and Sigmund Freud theory of personality. The results of the analysis show there
are nine effects that appear after a chronic childhood trauma, they are excessive
anxiety, excessive frightened, hard to believe to other people, difficult to
memorize something, wakeful, distressed, become a hater, interference of
traumatic memories, and dissociative disorder.
