Language shift is usually occured in time. Dominantly, potential of language shift is usually happened in students area. It is because the students love to learn new things especially language learning. In Gorontalo, language shift is still in process. The students used Indonesia with Gorontalo dialect but they mostly inserted English than Gorontalo language. Even though English as a foreign language and Gorontalo language as their local language. This study investigates potential of language shift in students communication towards Gorontalo language and English. This study aimed to examine the students communication in inserting Gorontalo and English language whether English is thriving or Gorontalo language is threatened by a potential of shifting and to analyse the factors according to Baker's (1996) theory. it is a qualitative research. The data of this study were collected through observations and interviews. This study was conducted from four students in SMAN 3 Gorontalo. The result of the data analysis reveals that there are seventy-two data from inserted English language, they are consist of forty-eight words, one datum of idiom, five data of phrase, nine data of hybrid, four data of word reduplication and five data of clause, and only ten data of inserted Gorontalo language, it is only ten data of words. The results also shows that the most influential factor is economic factor.
