This paper highlights type of pauses and their affecting factors towards students speaking ability. Some theories are used to lead for analyzing the data. The main theory is from Zellner (1994), he classified pauses into silent pauses and filled pauses. Descriptive qualitative method was used as underlying principle to analyze the data. For the site, third grade of SMA Negeri 1 Gorontalo were chosen because they are the highest grade at that school. The participants are 10 students. Observation and interview were chose for collecting the data. From all the participants, the result showed that the total pauses are 86 pauses; 45 silent pauses and 41 filled pauses. Moreover, the result showed that there are 3 factors that affecting the students to make pause, there are vocabulary, grammar and nervous.
