This study aims to analyze the way of male and female readers in filling the gap of Juan Villegas' characterization in Maria Concepcion short story by Kath Anne Porter. Regarding to this research method, this study used descriptive method in which to analysis the respond of the participants when filling the gaps. The participants were 20 students of English Department, UNG class of 2014 divided into 10 males and 10 females who have passed prose subject and want to participate in this study. In analyzing the data, this study applied the Aesthetic reader response theory from Wolfgang Iser who states that reading gives the reader chance to formulate the unformulated. The theory refers to the aesthetic response theory by Wolfgang Iser who states that reading gives the reader chance to formulate the unformulated (Selden,1993, p.57). In accordance with the result, this study found that most of female participants and some of male participants fill the gap of Juan Villegas' characterization as a bad characterization. It also found that female participants are multi-tasking while male participants are focus on one task only. The result showed that eventhough male and female participants have some differences, but how the way they fill the gap are same since the text that they read are same.
