This study aims to analyze and describe the impact of Dawson father characterization to Dawson Cole's personality, as the main characters of The Best of Me novel by Nicholas Sparks. The data of this research collected from the utterance of sentences in the novel and analyzed by using qualitative research with psychoanalysis approach. There are five phases in collecting the data: reading the novel, taking notes, identification of the problem, and classifying the data.
This study found 5 data that explain Dawson father characterization and 6 data that explain the impact of Dawson's father characterization to Dawson Cole's personality. 5 data that explain Dawson father characterization are classified into 5 utterances: perpetrator, bad words, tormentor, criminality, and pathologically violent. 6 data showed the negative and positive impact of Dawson's father characterization to Dawson Cole's personality. The negative impact is Dawson became a quiet person, emotional person, and frightened. The positive impact is cherishing, responsibility, and charity.
