The objective of study is to find out the level of students' ability in understanding reading explanatory text. This study limit only to describe how the students' competences in understanding reading explanatory text focused on six indicators are topic, main idea, explicit and implicit meaning, vocabulary and context, and generic structure based on theory of Djiwandono to describe their level of ability. The data were collected by giving multiple choice tests to all students at Second Grade of UPW 1 (Usaha Perjalanan Wisata) in SMK N 1 Kota Gorontalo. The data analyzed by using descriptive quantitative method and the result of study showed that there are 6 students (26.1 % - 43.3 %) students classify into low level, 3 students (63.3 % - 76%) classify into high level and 1 students (93.3%) classify into very high level. Generally, the result of students' competences is in medium level. Furthermore, the students have problem in some indicators such as main idea (48 % very low), implicit meaning (59 % low), vocabulary and content (42 % very low), and generic structure (42% very low).
