This study aims to analyze the psychological condition of the character, and it is especially on the main character personality in the black cat short story by Edgar Allan Poe. This study was qualitative study that collected the data from the plot, words, sentences, behavior or thoughts of the main character in the story and analyzed based on Freud concept of id, ego, and superego. Thus, this research used Sigmund Freud's theory of psychology. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the main character was depression. He treated all of his pets very nicely, but soon he changed his mind because he was frightened by the presence of the black cat. He became feeling hatred that finally drives him to kill his black cat brutally. Besides, he killed his wife because of his feeling hatred. In conclusion, the main character condition as depression always led do irrational things to satisfy his desire.
