Generally, students in Indonesia have different mother tongue as foreign learners of English. They might face some problems in speaking, particularly in producing the correct pronunciation. Regarding those manners, this study intends to investigate the words in headwords of Academic Word List (AWL) sub list 1 that tend to be mispronounced by the 4th semester students of English Department based on their ways in pronouncing consonant and vowel sounds, and also the word stress. The sources of data are students pronunciation in pronouncing 61 headwords of AWL sub list 1, and technique of collecting data is the recording test. Hence, the data are analyzed by using Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary which provides the phonetic transcription of correct pronunciation. Moreover, the result of this study shows that there are total 42 words in headwords of AWL sub list 1 that tend to be mispronounced; consist of three adjectives, 24 nouns, and 15 verbs. From total 42 mispronounced words, there are seven words that are mispronounced by most English Department students in the 4th semester. Furthermore, this study is attempted to build students awareness in having correct pronunciation of academic words.
