The objective of this research is to figure out students' competence in using simple past tense. This research employed a descriptive method to analyzed the data and involved students at second grade VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Batudaa as the sample. In this research, researcher focuses on the using simple past tense to devide the kind of regular verb and irregular verb. Narrative test was utilized to analyze the students' competence because it commonly used simple past tense as the feature tense. The result of this research showed the students' competence in this class can be classified into the average level and low level. It could be seen from all of the total score of the students' competence in correct answer and incorrect answer. Based on the result this research will help the students to consider about their level and will increase their abilty in using simple past tense. Furthermore this research to provide the information of students' competence as their basic consideration to improve their competence if the students are low level. This researcher also suggested that the teachers and students work together in learning activities and find solutions if there students who have difficulty in learning English, especially about using simple past tenses.
