English Department, Letters and Cultures Faculty, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Advisor (1) Prof. Dr. Kartin Lihawa, M.Pd (2) Indri Wirahmi Bay, S.Pd, M.A This study is mainly to analyze the commisive speech act in Bridge Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding. The objectives of the study are to find out what are the category of commisive speech acts and to know what is the dominant category of commisive speech act in the novel. This study is largely qualitative. Data were collected by the characters' uttterances in the Novel. The data analysis was based on Searle's (1979) classification of speech acts and Leech (1983) theory of context in order to describe the situation where commisive speech act of utterances occur. It is found that commissive speech acts were mostly realized through category 'Offer' (38%), followed by Refusal (34%), and Promise (28%). 'Offer' was dominant in the novel because it strongly implies characters' willingness to do something for somebody or give something to somebody. Based on the result above, the writer suggests to the next reaserchers conduct a study on speech act focusing on the same novel or the others because there will be more various types of illocutionary act in order to gain the different result. Keywords: Speech act, commisive, Bridge Jones' Diary Novel.
