Abstrak

The aim of this research is to analyze the metaphor in " The Raven " by Edgar Allan Poe based on theories of conceptual metaphor and Poe's recurring theme of melancholy in most of his literary works, in which this qualitative descriptive research aims to figure out the metaphor shown in the poem based on the meaning of several lines in different stanzas that was selected by the researcher based on preliminary reading and the theme of melancholy. The data was collected by reading and taking note, which would be analyzed later on in multiple steps of data interpretation according to the theoretical background. The findings showed that there are several lines in different stanzas of the poem which contains metaphor and meanings that depicted melancholy from the feeling of grief after losing a person the author cared about as he described in the poem. In conclusion, "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe contained several lines with metaphor and meanings that depicts characteristics of melancholy as Poe's recurring theme of literary work.
