Abstrak

Advisor (1) Novi Rusnarty Usu, S.Pd., M.A (2) Dr. Abid, MA TESOL The situation in English speaking class taught by a Native English Speaking Teacher (NEST) often reveals some challenges for the students. This research, therefore, brought to investigate the types of students� challenges in speaking class and how do they deal with the challenges. A qualitative method was used to conduct this research and a semi-structured interview protocols was used to collect data. The participants were 19 students on the 4th semester at English Department, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. The data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Results indicated that there were different kinds of challenges the students confronted, including psychological challenges and linguistic challenges, as well as variations in terms of anticipating the challenges, namely asking questions, using dictionary and giving some clues.
