Teachers factors in the process of teaching and learning include teachers method, teachers attitude and classroom management. One of them becomes the central phenomenon of this study, namely teachers attitude. Attitude leads to some types, such as asking questions, giving opportunity to students to develop their idea or suggestions during the class, giving appreciation, providing feedback and giving motivation (Gecer, 2002; Frymier, 1993). Hence, the purpose of this study is to examine students perceptions towards lecturers attitude when giving lectures in a speaking class. This study was conducted at the English Department, Faculty of Letters and Culture, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. This study applied qualitative descriptive method to explore the phenomenon through a set of questions in questionnaire with 18 students who were enrolling into the Speaking Class, and there were 5 students who were asked to confirm their answer in interview session. Observation is needed to checkout their answer with the real situations in class. The result from questionnaire, interview and observation showed that students dominant perception was positive, indicating that the lecturer in class had positive attitude. The students who had negative answer probably did not participate well in class because the lecturer preferred to appreciate, ask questions and give feedback to students who were active in class. Regarding these result, this study is expected to show whether or not the teacher has done a good job or not, so students and lecturers can achieve their learning goals.
Key words: Attitude, students perceptions, English speaking class.
