English language is taught and learned as a foreign language in Indonesia. Ideally, in the teaching and learning activities in EFL classroom, English is used as medium of instruction in EFL classrooms. However, there are several problems that affect the use of English as medium of instruction that are faced by the teachers and students in teaching and learning process such as the uneffective of the use of English as medium of instruction in classroom activity. This research aims to investigate the teachers' and students' perception on the use of English as medium of instruction in English as foreign language classrooms particularly in English department of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. It applies the theory of Villegas (2002) as well as qualitative descriptive method. The teachers and the students are interviewed to gain the information related to the use of English in teaching and learning in the classrooms activity. The research showed that most of the teachers and students believe that the use of English as medium of instruction in teaching and learning process is important. The teachers perceive that the use of English as medium of instruction in teaching process is a must. They argued that using English language in teaching activity is strengthen their identity as teachers of English department. Moreover, the students perceive that the use of English as medium of instruction in learning process increased their ability. They argued that they can imitate directly to what teacher said and also they will get used to the language. However, the teachers found some difficulties on the use of English as medium of instruction such as students low understanding of the instruction and also limited of vocabulary size. All in all, the use of English as medium of instruction in teaching and learning process has provided many advantages both for the teachers and students.
