Abstrak

Assertive speech act is kind of illocutionary act that commit the speaker to the truth of preposition. The aim of this research is to find out the kind of assertive speech act in Nicholas Sparks's novel, Message in a Bottle. This research is used qualitative methode to analyze the content of the utterance. The data of research is the utterances of characters in novel Message in a Bottle. To analyze the research, researcher used Searle and Vanderveken's theory. They divided the type of assertive speech act into 32 types. From the result, the researcher found 9 types of assertive speech act that contained in 18 utterances, they are; informing, stating, reporting, praising, retrodicting, swearing, suggesting, insisting, and claiming.
