Abstrak

This study is to describe English code switching occur in Arabic. The subject was the students of At-Tanwor Boarding School SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Gorontalo. From twenty two participant which is students in At-Tanwir Boarding School. Based on the research, the students practiced code switching in order to mastering the foreign language in Indonesia especially in Boarding School. The aims of this research were to investigate the types of code switching and the reason of using code switching. It was descriptive qualitative research designs of instrument are both observation and interview conduct in this research. The findings from the data analysis indicate that the types of code switching were found are three types: tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential code switching. And the reasons of using code switching is quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something (express solidarity), interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors),repetition used for clarification, and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor.
