The aim of the study is to find out Katherine Mansfield's style in using lexical categories in short story entitled The Woman at the Store. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method towards collecting and analyzing the data. One of the checklists of stylistic categories i.e. lexical category that proposed by Leech and Short (2007) isapplied as the guideline of data collection and data analysis. As a result, this study reveals that Katherine has her own way in using noun, adjective, verb, and adverb in expressing the content of the story i.e. about the loneliness of the woman at the store. Nouns and adjectives are used to refer to the characters and to give the description of the atmosphere in the story. Otherwise, verbs and adverbs are used to emphasize the happenings in the story. Also, this finds that Katherine has successfully pointed out her experience into her work by employing lexical categories. Katherine utilizes lexical features that refer to the background of her life. She is an intelligent writer in expressing the themes of her work i.e. about the loneliness, isolation, and cruelty. In short, this study proves that the author of short story like Katherine Mansfield has her own style in using lingiustic features in arranging her work.
