Translation has been an essential part in public sign to convey the information from the source language to the target language. This research investigates the issue related to linguistic problems in public sign translations in some regions in Indonesia; Gorontalo, Makassar, Jakarta, Bali, and Surabaya. Bilingual public signs are the data source of this research and they are investigated through functional theory by Nord (2001). Data analysis proved that, 30 bilingual public signs found in Makassar, which are the highest number of public signs, 14 bilingual public signs from Gorontalo, 13 public signs and their translation from Jakarta, 6 bilingual public signs from Bali and 2 public signs from Surabaya. It is also revealed that from 65 bilingual public signs, 32 are containing problems. The major types of problems are the errors on lexical choice, then followed by word for word translation, spelling errors, grammatical errors, word redundancy, and the last problem is ambiguous translation. This research concludes that, bilingual public Signs in different regions in Indonesia commonly have similar problem in terms of linguistic site. Those problems can cause the alteration of meaning and function from source language to target language, further, signs that contained problem can cause misunderstanding in conveying the information.
