Abstrak
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test that requires to measure the students English proficiency. In Universitas Negeri Gorontalo particularly in English Department, Faculty Letter and Culture make the TOEFL as one of the requirements for students' graduation. Due to the fact, there are several students who face some obstacle in order to pass the standard score of TOEFL test. Based on preliminary research, the difficulty in answering Structure and Written Expression become one of the biggest obstacles in getting the standard score. Therefore, this study intends to analyze the students' difficulties in TOEFL Structure and Written Expression. The participants of this research are the students of the academic year 2014 in English Department, Faculty Letter and Culture, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. The mixed method between quantitative and qualitative descriptive becomes the appropriate method for this research due to the data of this research require the grading from the test and data from the interview section. As the result of this study, there are five variables in structure and written expression that considered as the most difficult variable that the students face. The variable are sentence and clause (84%), Redundancy (95%), Noun (89%), Agreement (89%), and pronoun (84%). Moreover, lack of grammar skill, less focus, easily distracted, time management becomes the factor that influences the difficulty in answering the test. Therefore, the awareness in more practice and learn before take the TOEFL become the recommendation for the students. Finally, for the lecturers of the English Department, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo expected to teach more grammar skill by applying the TOEFL model in subjects.
