Abstrak
This study aimed to elaborate the students' perception on the implementation of diary as the learning strategy of Syntax course in English Departement. Specifically, it attempted to address the following question: What are the students' perceptions on the use of diary as the strategy in learning Syntax? The subject of the study is class D that consists of 27 students in the 5th semester. Qualitative research is used to analyze the data. Therefore, a questionnaire and interview question was developed by the researcher based on three indicators perception as cited in BimoWalgito (1990), including; absorption, understanding, and evaluation. Thus, the question has been distributing to the students. The result of the study revealed that the diary receives a positive response from students, such as in students' activity, either inside or outside the classroom, specifically for those who apply this strategy. Instead of impacting students, this strategy also indirectly provides benefits for the lecturers in the classroom. Chamot (2005) suggested to use a diary for instructional purposes as it can help students develop their own learning processes and strategies. Besides, the strategy also has some of negative impact, such as the lack of understanding the new material makes it difficult for students to learn independently and also each student is having different perspectives related to the material they have gained. Therefore, the role of the lecturers is very important in the classroom as they are obliged to clarify and explain again the material that still confuses the students.
