Abstrak
This research was conducted to find out the translation methods applied by the translator in translating figurative language in O.Henrys short stories. This was a descriptive qualitative research, in which the data were taken from nine short stories as the research documents. Those nine short stories are chosen because the uniqueness of his short stories reflects of his wide-range of experiences and is distinctive for its witticism. There were 19 data collected from those nine short stories. The technique of data analysis used in this research was a content analysis method. In addition, the researcher employed Newmarks Theory of translation method in analyzing the findings. Based on the research findings, five types of translation methods were found in the short stories and the method that was frequently used was literal translation. From nine short stories, it was obtained seven simile, three hyperbole, and three metaphor which were translated with literal translation. To conclude, the findings of the study indicated that the result of literal translation was dominantly found compared to the other translation methods. This research is expected to be helpful to improve the reference of students and readers concerning the translation method.
