Abstrak
Abstract Try Suci D. Bilondatu, 2019. The Use of Filler on Students' Speaking Performance. A Case Study to the Students of English Department in Academic Year 2017. English Department, Letters and Cultures Faculty, Gorontalo State University. Advisor (1) Titien F. Mohammad, S.Pd., M. App. Ling. Advisor (2) Prof. Nonny Basalama,M.A., Ph.D. This research aimed to find out the frequency of using filler on students' speaking performance and the causes of using filler. Also, the research was conducted at English Department in Academic Year 2017. The participants were the students of fourth semester which consists of 20 students. Additionally, the method that used in this research was mix methods. Besides, the instruments employed in this research were speaking test that adopted from example of IELTS test and interview. Furthermore, the result of this research found that the utilization of filler was dominant on unlexicalized filler rather than lexicalized filler. Regarding to the research findings it showed that unlexicalized filler was higher (159) with the average 7.95 rather than frequency of using lexicalized filler (90) with the average 4.5. While for the result of the causes of using filler were unfamiliar with topic, thought process, unfamiliar with vocabulary, nervousness, and getting stuck. Therefore, the students need to increase their speaking skill, they need to be more practice, and they should decrease using filler a lot in speaking performance.
