To understand novel people need to understand the specific meaning and purpose of the conversation among the characters. Through speech act, they will know when they produce an utterance; it is described as saying something and interpreted as doing something. In this research, entitled ��Ã..."An Analysis of Assertive Act in The Novel Dear John by Nicholas SparksÃ��ÂÂ, the researcher focused on the assertive act as branch of speech act. This research is aimed to find out the types of assertive acts in the novel Dear John. This research used qualitative method. The data analysis is based on Searle and Vanderveken's (1985) theory about 32 types of assertive acts. The result showed that 20 of 32 types of assertive acts in this novel are asserting, affirming, stating, denying, disclaiming, assuring, rebutting, informing, notifying, reminding, reporting, suggesting, insisting, hypothesizing, admitting, blaming, praising, complaining, boasting and claiming. To sum up, assertive act as part of speech act is a study that has the potential to investigate literature issues. Therefore, the researcher hopes this research will help the next researcher who wants to conduct similar research.
