Abstrak
Taboo words are words that have terrible meaning and should be avoided to say in daily communication since they visualize indecent, disrespectful, vulgar, and any other negative effect to societys life. Further, there is strong relationship between taboo words phenomenon and movie, in which movie is an artwork that is created to represent humans real life. The movie entitled ..."Miracle at St. Anna is an American film that shows the phenomenon of taboo words used by the black and white characters. This study aimed to investigate the types of taboo words used by the characters in movie ..."Miracle at St. Anna directed by Spike Lee and how taboo words are functioned according to the meaning, situation, and ethnic groups. The characters in the movie consist of black and white characters, in which it is crucial to see how people from different ethnics utter taboo words. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method for describing the existing condition, the function, and the meaning of each taboo word in the movie. In classifying the types of taboo words, the researcher conducts the theory of Batistella (2005) as the guideline of this research. The result reveals that there are several data of taboo words found in the movie, and they are categorized into four categories of taboo words i.e., epithet, profanity, obscenity, and vulgarity. The most dominant type that appears in the movie is epithet. Meanwhile, the least type of taboo words uttered by the characters is vulgarity. In term of function, it is found that taboo words are mostly produced by the speaker to express anger or frustration. Moreover, in the use of taboo words between white and black characters, the result discovered that both of white and black characters are almost equal in uttering taboo words.
