Directive Speech Act is one of the most important things in doing communication. It contains not only meaningful information but also an instruction for someone to do something. Directive speech acts function to indicate a wish from the speaker that must be fulfilled by the listener. Related to this, this study examines the directive speech acts used by the main character in a movie. Esther Coleman is the main character in the horror movie Orphan who plays as a very manipulative and terrible psychopath. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out what types of directive speech acts are used by the main character in a horror movie. This study used qualitative method in which data collection is done by watching the movie, analyzing the body movement and the dialogues of the main character with other characters. A total of 34 directive speech acts were successfully identified. The result of analysis showed that the directive speech act of question type is the most frequently used in the movie with 10 data. It is followed by requestive type with 9 cases, requirements and advisories types with 5 cases of each, and prohibiting type with 3 numbers of case. The least frequently used directive speech act is permissive type with 2 numbers of case. With the analysis of this study, readers can further understand the use of directive speech acts in various contexts and purposes, and it is expected to give some useful insights in understanding what directive speech acts is.
