The Pursuit of Happyness is an autobiographical novel that tells about the struggle of an African-American writer named Chris Gardner to achieve his dream in America. Gardner's life was full of poverty, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. Therefore, Gardner desperately wanted a better life. As a black people, he had to fight hard to achieve his dream caused of inequality among white people. Mostly, it talks about the real situation and culture that happens in society which has moral values that can be applied in real life. So, the research questions is about "What are the cultural codes implied in The Pursuit of Happyness novel"Ã��Ã�ÂÂ. The cultural code itself is a reference to a science or scientific institution. People usually indicate this knowledge such as physics, physiology, history, and so on. This research uses qualitative research method by using the theory of the cultural code Roland Barthes. With using the cultural code of Bathes theory, it is found there are racial discrimination, fight for black American dream, the situation of San Francisco at that time, the stereotype in society. It also found the interesting characteristics that he is very smart, a hard worker, and cares about his family, especially his son, who encourages him to be successful.
