Abstrak
The purpose of this research was to investigate the difficulties encountered by English Department students during their process of translating English short stories into Indonesian Language. This research was conducted at English Department of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo and the participants of this research were recruited from English Department students, academic year 2017. A qualitative method was employed in order to discover the results. Data collection was employed by using think aloud protocols (perticularly, types of think retrospective think aloud) and then the data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results discovered that there are two main difficulties encountered by the participants, they are difficulties related to selecting and translating suitable vocabulary and grammatical difficulty. Difficulty in selecting and tranating suitable vocabulary covered three sub difficulties, they are difficult in selecting and translating the lexical meaning of newly-encountered vocabulary, difficult in selecting suitable vocabulary for children (as the target readers), and difficult in selecting proper context for translated words. In addition, grammatical difficulty covered two sub difficulties, they are unclear grammar and lack of grammar comprehension. Therefore, it can be concluded that students of English Department were in fact encountered difficulties in translating short stories from English into Indonesian language.
