Abstrak
The study of Conversation Analysis is an approach to spoken discourse that aims to understand how people manage their interactions and how the speakers organized and developed the conversation. Conversation analysis is concerned with "identifying patterns of action"��� as stated by Liddicoat (2007, p. 10). Brian Paltridge proposed a theory in his book about Sequences and Structures in Conversation Analysis in 2012. Seeing this theory, the researcher wants to classify the interviews of Michelle Obama in Jimmy Kimmel in "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" show in the six sequences and structures which are opening conversation, turn-taking, adjacency pairs, feedback, repair, and closing conversation. To classify the data, the researcher use CA transcription symbols proposed by Jefferson Transcription System to capture minor details such as gestures, intonation, volume, emphasis, speed of delivery, and sound stretching. Using the qualitative method, the data were collected using documentation and transcription process and were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman theory (1984, as cited in Sugiyono, 2014, p. 247-253) which are data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. As the results, all the six sequences and structures proposed by Paltridge (2012) happened during the interview. Finally, it can be concluded that even though the theory of conversation analysis was originally used to analyze phone calls, the same pattern of six sequences and structures proposed by Paltridge (2012) happened in the interview between Michelle Obama and Jimmy Kimmel.
